Fall is here! And where’s the best place to be? Brown County of course! With its awesome autumn views and spectacular fall colors, Brown County is one of the top spots in the Midwest (or maybe even the nation) to visit in the fall. Our State Park has even been named the Best Indiana Attraction by USA Today! That being said, we’ve created some travel tips to get you here!

Keep tabs on the Leaf Cam to plot the perfect time to come!

It’s back! Our famous Leaf Cam is up and running. Offering sprawling views of Brown County’s beautiful forest, the Leaf Cam will capture our stunning fall foliage day-by-day. Watch as autumn rolls in and our trees change from bright green to even more vibrant yellow, orange, red, and even purple! Keep tabs on fall in Brown County by tuning into the Leaf Cam. Use it to plan your visit and coordinate your day, weekend, or week in Brown County with the changing foliage! Wanting to stay overnight? Plan ahead and book in advance!

There’s no doubt about it…Brown County gets pretty busy in the fall! Which is why booking your room in advance is a must. Don’t wait until you’re already here…plan ahead and find the perfect place to stay before you visit! From secluded cabins and cozy inns to quaint B&Bs, charming hotels, and even camping, there are plenty of lodging options in Brown County! Need some help? Call the Visitors Center at 812-988-7303. Not only will you get some good suggestions, but the Visitors Center also has a master list of lodging availability to save you a few phone calls!

Consider it your best friend for the trip—the Discover Brown County app has everything you need! In fact, we’d say it’s the number one resource to have. From info on shops, restaurants, attractions, and lodging to finding parking, restrooms, and more, the app makes life easy. You can make reservations, use maps and directions, search for local events, and even find the Visitors Center on social media. Think of it as your very own personal tour guide…one that just so happens to conveniently fit in your pocket! Be sure to download the app before heading our way. You’ll be glad you did. Plus, it’s free! You can easily find it in the App Store, Google Play, or on our website. Don’t forget to turn on your notifications for updates on important info and Brown County fun!

Dress appropriately…think comfort, not chic!

Let’s be honest, Brown County is laid-back and relaxed. No need to get all dressed up around here! You’ll feel right at home in a pair of jeans no matter where you go. The main thing to remember is to dress for comfort! If you’re exploring the Village, you’ll be walking. Even though nothing is too far away, wearing shoes that are comfy and easy to walk in are a must! If you’re outside of the Village, chances are you’ll be enjoying some outdoor adventure…so again, wear shoes that you can move around in. Also, be sure to check the forecast before you come. Pack your rain gear and dress in layers. Warm days, chilly nights…there’s no avoiding the great outdoors in Brown County!

Get ready for the drive. Do: admire the leaves. Don’t: get lost!

It doesn’t matter which direction you’re coming from, the drive to Brown County is sure to be breathtaking! The closer you get to the destination, the bolder and brighter the leaves will become, so take time to really enjoy the ride. As the fall colors intensify near Brown County…traffic will likely do the same. Instead of stressing about it or letting it damper your spirits, just take some extra time to admire the leaves! If you’re feeling adventurous and want to bypass the traffic, consider taking some of Brown County’s beautiful back roads. Let this map show you the way!

You made it! Now where to park and use the restroom?

This is where the Discover Brown County app comes in handy! All parking and restroom options are only a few swipes and clicks away. With both free and paid parking lots, along with street parking, we’ve got you’re parking needs covered! You can find all these parking options in the “More” section of the Discover Brown County app, complete with details and directions to guide you there. Same goes for restrooms. All four public restrooms can be found in the “More” section of the app too! You can always stop in the Visitors Center in our new location at 211 South Van Buren Street for directions as well!

Hungry? It’s worth the wait. 

During your visit, eating out is most likely on the agenda. How could it not be with all the tasty food we have to offer? A helpful tidbit of info to know is that during the fall, most restaurants do not take reservations. So be sure to plan ahead! Give yourself plenty of time for dining and be patient. Trust us…it’s worth the wait! Pick out a place to eat before it’s actually time to eat and consider dining at odd times. Stop by the Visitors Center to browse a book of menus or scroll through places to eat on the Discover Brown County app. There’s always snacking throughout the day too. After all, we’ve got some pretty great sweet, treat, and snack shops in the Village!

Explore more of Brown County…get off-the-beaten path!

There’s more to Brown County than meets the eye! Whether it’s on your drive here or during your visit, it’s great to get off-the-beaten path. Take a break from the car or from the Village crowd and head off on a Brown County adventure! Catch a glimpse into the life of a local artist on the Back Roads Studio Tour, swing by the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum, grab some lunch and tasty tea at the Farmhouse Café, or try gold panning at the Gatesville Country Store. Stop off at Gnaw Bone for a visit to Bear Wallow Distillery and Brown County Winery. Be sure to get some Gnaw Bone food while you’re at it— baked goods, coffee, and more! Go antiquing at Plum Creek Antiques or Brown County Antique Mall, admire some art at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, or spend the afternoon in the historic village of Story. Be sure to see Brown County’s beautiful leaves on an ultimate outdoor adventure. Zip lining, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding…the possibilities are endless in Brown County!
